Brief Project Description

This was a design build project to perform API 653 repairs to three bulk fuel storage tanks (2184, 2185, & 2187) at Langley AFB, VA.  The scope of work for each tank included removal of the existing geodesic dome and platform, removal of the existing internal steel floating pans on Tanks 2184 and 2185, and removal of existing aluminum honeycomb floating pan on Tank 2187.  API 653 repairs included the installation of a new steel fixed roof and roof structure without a center column, including necessary shell stiffening and roof appurtenances (stilling wells, ladder hatch, roof inspection hatches, roof guardrail, panel access hatch, center vent, and scaffold cable supports), replacement of the existing 24 inch manways with new 36 inch manways, installation of high level alarm platforms, extension of the stair guardrail to meet OSHA requirements, modification or replacement of the internal receipt, issue, water draw-off, and low suction piping and supports, new level alarm and water draw-off nozzles, replacement of shell conduit/tubing supports, replacement of the shell ground lugs, new data plate, and tank hydrostatic testing.  Complete internal and external coating replacement was also performed.  The new coating system was performed in accordance with 09 97 13.17 (internal coatings) and 09 97 13.27 (external coatings).  External pipe repairs included replacement of the existing carbon steel thermal relief system with new stainless steel valves and piping, tie-in of the low suction line to the issue line, replacement of the entire water draw-off system including tank, piping, and valves, installation of double block and bleed isolation valves throughout the facility, and installation of low point drains.  Additional repairs including secondary containment crack repairs, secondary containment liner repairs, repair to the tank foundation, and removal and reinstallation of the existing ENRAF ATG system.
